Common Vision Problems
Your ophthalmologist can identify many of the common vision problems, including:

Nearsightedness – Also known as myopia, nearsightedness is the most common vision problem in ophthalmology. Images focus in front of the retina, instead of directly on the retina’s surface, because the eye is too long or the cornea is too curved. One or a combination of these abnormalities can cause objects that are far away to appear blurry. You can correct this problem by wearing glasses, contacts, or by undergoing refractive surgery, such as LASIK.

Farsightedness – Hyperopia, or farsightedness, affects around a quarter of the population. This ophthalmological issue occurs when light enters the eye behind the retina because the eye is too short or the cornea is too flat. This will make objects that are close to you appear blurry. It is common for children to be born farsighted, but the problem fixes itself naturally because the eyeball lengthens with development. Like nearsightedness, farsightedness can be fixed with corrective lenses, contacts, or, in some cases, LASIK surgery.

Astigmatism – Images are distorted and not uniform in all directions, so objects both near and far appear blurry. This occurs when the cornea is shaped irregularly. Astigmatism often occurs in conjunction with myopia or hyperopia. Ophthalmologist are unsure of the specific cause of astigmatism, but it’s easily treated with the use of glasses, contacts, and, in some cases, LASIK surgery can help with certain types of astigmatism.

Presbyopia – Disorder caused by the normal aging process that typically affects reading vision. Doctors can also measure the severity of these vision problems by evaluating the shape of your eye and its cornea. The results determine your prescription. These problems are usually corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or by laser vision correction procedures – AST, CK and LASIK. However, good visual acuity does not necessarily mean good visual quality. Experts believe other qualitative factors contribute to common low-light vision problems, including glare and halos. You can have these vision problems and still score 20/20 on a vision exam.

Other Common Vision Problems
Cataracts – We provide the most advanced treatment for cataract surgery, Dropless, bladeless cataract surgery. The dropless technique saves the patient from dealing with cumbersome, expensive drop regimens prior to and following surgery. Our surgeons instill Tri-Moxi*, a combination of antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory which is absorbed by the eye over the next month. We also offer a bladeless laser technology, which replaces the use of hand-held surgical tools, potentially reducing risks and improving visual outcomes of cataract surgery. Not only does laser cataract surgery remove cataracts, your surgeon will then implant a new intraocular lens (IOL), which will provide vision correction so that you may not need to continue wearing glasses after the procedure. An IOL is implanted with traditional and bladeless laser cataract surgery. Each cataract surgery plan is customized to fit the patient’s needs and lifestyle.

Hazy vision after cataract surgery – After cataract surgery, about 20% of patients will develop a haze in their eye. This haze may result in blurred or double vision. This haze is called Posterior Capsule Opacity (PCO) and is treated with YAG laser capsulotomy surgery. This painless procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed by an ophthalmologist. Recovery is quick and easy and you can often return to your normal activities immediately after surgery.

Glaucoma – Glaucoma manifests when pressure builds up inside the eye. Symptoms of glaucoma vary widely. Some patients may have pain and redness while other patients have no symptoms at all. Other symptoms include halos, narrow vision, and vision loss. Treatment for glaucoma often includes prescription eye drops but can also include laser trabeculoplasty surgery. During this procedure a laser is focused on the part of the eye where the fluid is drained. Glaucoma may also be treated at the time of cataract surgery with an iStent implant. This tiny implant (currently the smallest FDA approved implant) has helped thousands of people with glaucoma successfully manage their intraocular pressure. By taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity during cataract surgery, patients can help address both of these conditions at the same time.
